Natural products, specifically from plants have been the basis of curing human diseases. The history of medicine is rooted in the existence of human civilization. The present day medicine system has evolved over the years by the enduring scientific and observational efforts of researchers; however, the basis of its development remains rooted in traditional medicine. Plant-based medicines which were used as crude drugs now serve as the basis of novel drug discovery. The indigenous knowledge of herbal formulations were passed down from generation to generation which has significantly contributed to the development of different traditional systems of medicine. The present review gives a brief account of the history of the documented history of medicinal plants from various sources.
