Influence of Socio-economic Characteristics of Farmer-Subscribers on Utilization Pattern of Kisan Mobile Advisory Service (KMAS) in Banaskantha District of Gujarat State, India

Abstract:

In order to explore the utilization pattern of KMAS by farmer-subscriber it is necessary to understand their socio-economic status. In this view, a study was conducted to analyze socio-economic characteristics of farmer-subscriber and their influence on utilization pattern of KMAS in Banaskantha district of Gujarat state. A total of 123 respondents were selected through multistage sampling technique constituted sample size and data collection was done with the help of structured schedule by personal interview of the respondents. Results of the study revealed that majority of the farmers (79.67%) belonged to middle and young age group who were enthusiastic and use more of mobile phones for getting information related to agriculture and allied activities. Great majority of farmers (76.42%) had primary to middle school education for which using mobile phone was easy. Around (42.28%) had medium level of farming experience. 78.87 per cent respondents followed agriculture plus animal husbandry system of farming? Whereas (46.34%) farmers had small and marginal (24.39%) land holdings, had medium (68.29%) level of annual incomewhich encourage usage of modern information sources, possess medium (78.05%) level of scientific orientation. The study recommends the need for considering socio-economic conditions of farmers as it influences the affordability and utilization of KMAS.
