Abstract:

This study aimed to screen the antioxidant activity of royal jelly (RJ) collected from 2 regions of Bulgaria (Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo) and RJ samples from the market using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method for antiradical activity and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content was determined according to Folin-Ciocalteu procedure. All RJ samples were able to scavenge free radicals in wide ranges (10.17 – 39.39% inhibition). The FRAP and total polyphenols also showed high variability and a correlation between them was found. For the all samples the following ranges were obtained: FRAP 0.44 – 8.49 mM Fe2+/g, total polyphenols 11.66 – 36.73 (mg GAE/g).

Keywords: Royal jelly, Antioxidant activity, Total polyphenols, Bulgarian RJ, DPPH, FRAP.
