Abstract:

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is a major pest of cabbage, and the development of eco-friendly management strategies is essential to reduce dependence on synthetic insecticides. The present investigation assessed the compatibility and insecticidal efficacy of three neem derivatives, namely neem seed kernel extract (NSKE, 5%), neem oil (5%), and azadirachtin (0.15%), in combination with five isolates of Beauveria bassiana. The laboratory experiments were conducted during 2024–2025 at the Biocontrol Research and Production Centre, Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, using a factorial completely randomized design with four replications for compatibility assessment. Radial growth was evaluated at 3, 5, and 7 days after incubation, while conidial production and viability were assessed on the tenth day. Bioefficacy was evaluated against third-instar P. xylostella larvae using the leaf-dip method. Among the isolates, Bb Local recorded the highest radial growth at 3 and 5 days (50.65 and 68.78 mm, respectively), whereas MTCC-1022 showed the highest growth at 7 days (77.84 mm). Among neem derivatives, NSKE recorded the highest radial growth at 7 days (69.42 mm), while neem oil exhibited the greatest percentage inhibition at 3, 5, and 7 days (30.73, 34.26, and 20.15%, respectively). The NBAIM-93 × neem oil combination recorded the highest inhibition at all three intervals (54.92, 51.62, and 46.71%, respectively). The highest conidial production was recorded in the fungus-only control (2.17 × 10⁸ spores/ml), particularly in Bb Local × control (2.49 × 10⁸ spores/ml). MTCC-1022 showed the highest mean conidial viability (98.07%), while the highest treatment mean was recorded in the fungus-only control (98.36%); NBAIM-92 × control recorded the maximum interaction value (98.77%). At 120 hours after treatment, azadirachtin recorded the highest mean larval mortality (59.77%), followed by NSKE (50.22%) and neem oil (48.00%). The highest mortality was observed in the NBAIM-93 × azadirachtin combination (65.55%). The combination of selected B. bassiana isolates with neem derivatives offers potential for developing eco-friendly and sustainable management strategies against P. xylostella, potentially reducing reliance on synthetic insecticides. Identifying compatible combinations that maintain fungal viability while improving larval suppression is essential for their integration into environmentally compatible integrated pest management programmes.
