Abstract:

Phytopathogenic fungi are major constraints to global crop production, causing substantial losses in yield and quality, while increasing fungicide resistance and environmental concerns challenge conventional disease management. Nanotechnology offers a promising alternative through enhanced surface reactivity, tunable properties, controlled release, and multifunctional antifungal activity. This review summarizes nanotechnology-based approaches for fungal pathogen detection and control, focusing on nanomaterial mechanisms, plant defence modulation, and nano-enabled diagnostics. Nanomaterials can disrupt fungal membrane integrity, redox balance, metabolism, spore germination, and hyphal growth, while also activating plant defence through reactive oxygen species, antioxidant systems, phytohormones, and defence-related genes. Advanced tools, including nanobiosensors, quantum dots, nanopore sequencing, and microneedle platforms, enable rapid pathogen detection. Despite these advantages, concerns regarding ecotoxicity, persistence, beneficial microbiota, cost, standardisation, and regulatory frameworks remain. Future applications require safe-by-design nanomaterials, mechanistic validation, realistic field evaluation, and harmonised regulations for sustainable fungal disease management.
