Abstract:

Six brinjal genotypes of diverse origin Arka Keshav, Arka Nidhi, Arka Neelkanth, Annamalai, PLR 2 and Poiyur Local were crossed in a full diallel mating design in the Department of Horticulture, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal and the resulting 30 F1 hybrids along with their parents were evaluated in a randomized block design for sixteen quantitative and quality characters. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes for all the characters studied. Combining ability analysis showed that variances due to general combining ability (gca), specific combining ability (sca) and reciprocal effects were significant for almost all characters, indicating that both additive and non-additive gene actions govern the expression of the traits. The gca:sca ratio exceeded unity for most characters, suggesting a preponderance of additive gene action, whereas leaf area index, days to first fruiting and number of fruits plant⁻¹ were predominantly under non-additive control. Poiyur Local, Annamalai and PLR 2 emerged as the best general combiners for fruit yield plant⁻¹ and most of its component characters, while Arka Neelkanth was the best combiner for earliness. The cross combinations Poiyur Local × Arka Neelkanth, Poiyur Local × Annamalai, Arka Nidhi × Poiyur Local and Arka Neelkanth × Poiyur Local recorded significant desirable sca effects coupled with high per se performance and may be exploited through heterosis breeding depending on the gene action.
