Socio-Economic Roles of Birds in Drought Management: A Case of Kyatune-Ikanga Ward in Kitui County, Kenya

Abstract:

In the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), drought is a serious climate-related threat to livelihoods, food security, and ecological stability. The problem is exacerbated by climate change and population growth pressure. People make use of various knowledge systems to plan and overcome the perils of drought. The technical and policy-based drought management measures have received a lot of attention but have not been well embraced in the rural areas. On the other hand, the importance of biodiversity and traditional ecological knowledge to drought management is reckoned to play a major role in this regard, but it is still not well documented. Cognizance is numerous ecosystem services provided by birds, including monitoring the environment, controlling pests, dispersing seeds, and cycling nutrients. In the Kyatune-Ikanga Ward, Kitui County, Kenya, this study investigated the socioeconomic functions of birds in managing drought. The findings showed that the resident community relies heavily on indigenous ecological knowledge for weather forecasting and drought management. By carefully observing the movements, sounds, and behavioral changes of specific birds, households can predict the onset of rains, anticipate dry spells, and decide on crops and livestock management. While the bird bio-indicators provide early warnings, the community integrates this knowledge with a broader set of traditional practices to manage drought. The study concludes that knowledge on bird behaviours is a vital bio-indicator to anticipate seasons, navigate weather variations, and prepare for potential droughts. The overall recommendation is of active documentation of traditional ecological knowledge alongside conventional meteorology.
