Biological Processes for the Purification of Contaminated Wastewater

Abstract:

Water is one of the most essential natural resources for sustaining life on Earth and plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting agricultural production, industrial development, and human health. However, rapid urbanization, industrial expansion, intensive agricultural activities, and population growth have significantly increased the discharge of pollutants into natural water bodies. As a result, rivers, lakes, and groundwater resources are increasingly contaminated with organic matter, heavy metals, nutrients, pesticides, pathogenic microorganisms, and various toxic chemicals. This growing pollution poses serious environmental, economic, and public health challenges, making the protection and sustainable management of water resources a global priority. This article provides comprehensive information on the efficient use of water resources, strategies for water conservation, and measures aimed at preventing water pollution. It discusses the major sources and types of water contaminants, their impact on aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health, as well as the long-term environmental consequences associated with untreated wastewater discharge. Particular attention is given to the deterioration of water quality caused by industrial effluents, municipal wastewater, and agricultural runoff, all of which contribute to the degradation of freshwater ecosystems.
