Abstract:

To identify and estimate the risks of microbial proliferation for the health of populations living in environments degraded by pollutants, especially heavy metals. The rats Wistar were exposed to two common environmental pollutants, lead acetate (administered orally) and mercury oxide (via inhalation), for 28 days, followed by an infection with the species Escherichia coli. The control group showed no significant effects on growth, behavior, or well-being. In contrast, the group exposed to lead acetate exhibited an irreversible decrease in body growth, immune impairment characterized by a significant decrease in erythrocyte and leukocyte parameters, as well as an elevation in CRP levels. Additionally, the group exposed to mercury oxide also showed an irreversible decrease in body growth, deterioration of well-being, and a significant increase in CRP, indicating persistent infection. Exposure to lead and mercury exacerbates symptoms in rats and compromises their ability to fight infections, particularly on those caused by Escherichia coli. This just goes to show how fragile our bodies are when exposed to pollutants, and how much we need to be wary of them, given our constant contact with even the least pathogenic micro-organisms.
