Abstract:

Healthcare access is a critical component of social protection. It ensures that individuals have the necessary support and services to maintain and improve their health, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Here's how healthcare access functions as social protection. Healthcare access as social protection aims to achieve universal health coverage which means that all individuals and communities have access to quality healthcare services without suffering financial hardship. Universal health coverage ensures that everyone can receive the necessary healthcare they need throughout their lives, including preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative services. Healthcare access as social protection includes the provision of essential health services, such as primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, immunizations, emergency care, and treatment for common diseases. These services are crucial for maintaining good health, preventing illnesses, and addressing health challenges promptly. Primary healthcare forms the foundation of essential health services. It includes basic medical care, preventive services, health education, and early detection and management of common health conditions. Primary healthcare providers, such as family doctors, nurse practitioners, and community health workers, deliver comprehensive and accessible care at the community level. Essential health services include programs for the prevention and control of infectious diseases, such as immunizations, screening for communicable diseases, and treatment of common infections. These interventions help prevent the spread of diseases, protect individuals and communities from outbreaks, and reduce the burden of infectious diseases on the healthcare system. Services for managing chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory conditions are essential to prevent complications and improve the quality of life for individuals living with these conditions. This includes regular check-ups, access to medication, lifestyle counseling and self-management support. Recognizing the importance of mental health, essential health services include mental health interventions, counseling and treatment for common mental health disorders. These services aim to improve mental well-being, reduce the stigma associated with mental health and ensure access to appropriate care and support. Health promotion and education initiatives are integral to essential health services. They involve raising awareness, providing information on healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and encouraging behavior change to promote overall health and well-being. These essential health services form the core components of a well-functioning healthcare system. They are critical in achieving universal health coverage and ensuring that individuals have access to the necessary care to maintain good health and address their healthcare needs throughout their lives.
