Abstract:

Biofertilizers are the organic fertilizers obtained from microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, etc. which resides in soil. They are mostly present in the rhizosphere area of the soil found interacting with soil microbes. Widely known for improving growth and yield of crop, their activity as antagonists against various pathogenic microorganisms is being practiced by various growers. Moreover soil fertility is greatly enhanced by their presence in the soil. India is an agricultural country with rice as its staple food. To meet the demands of the growing population, rice production were increased by application of inorganic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, etc. But with time, the continuous use of inorganic fertilizers and chemicals greatly affect the soil health alterating physico-chemical properties of soil which results in poor yield and unfertile soil. Moreover, most of the minerals present naturally in soil are found to be depleted due to continuous use of chemicals. Hence the idea of using biofertilizers came to light. Among the biofertilizers Azospirillum and Trichoderma are widely used in agriculture and well known for their role in increasing yield, nutrient uptake and especially as biocontrol agents controlling various plant diseases. Biofertilizer treatment along with inorganic fertilizer has been found effective in rice cultivation. One important point is one can reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers which the farmers faced great problem in acquiring them during the rice growing season. The idea of combined application of biofertilizers and inorganic fertilizers if properly executed can solve this problem to a large extent and help in sustainable food production.
