Abstract:

The present study assessed the semen characteristics of bulls used for Artificial Insemination (AI) programme with regard to season, ambient temperature and relative humidity in cross bred bulls. Forty one ejaculates from 2 cross bred bulls of 4 to 6 years weighing 300 to 450 kgs reared at Semen Production Centre, Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Pantnagar India, were used. AV method was used to collect the semen twice a week for 6 months. The temperature and relative humidity of respective days was taken from metrological department located nearby. Data of 41 ejaculates was subjected to least square of mean analysis to assess the effect of THI on various semen quality parameters. Three groups were formed on the basis of THI range i.e., Group I having THI of 64 to 72 (n=10), Group II (72 to 78, n=13) and Group III (78 to 84, n=18). THI variations had no significant effect on time taken to reduce Methylene Blue i.e. MBRT but it had a significant (P<0.05) effect on % live sperm, Conc. of sperm and HOST. The results indicated that the % live sperms, Concentration and Host of the semen decreases significantly with the increase in THI value and the value of these three parameters was found highest at mean THI value of 68.42.
