Abstract:

Biochar holds great potential to enhance various soil properties (physical, chemical, and biological) and boost plant productivity. This study examined the impact of combining biochar with goat manure on sandy soil's bulk density and porosity, peanut yield (Arachis hypogaea L.), and the bacterial community. We also evaluated the short- and long-term economic implications of biochar application on peanut productivity. Using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates, treatments included a control, 10 tons per hectare of goat manure, 2 % biochar plus 10 tons per hectare of goat manure, and 5 % biochar plus 10 tons per hectare of goat manure. Results indicated that 5% biochar plus 10 tons per hectare of goat manure reduced bulk density by 31 %, increased porosity by 17 %, and boosted peanut yield by 82 % compared to the control. Additionally, the bacterial population significantly increased in the 5 % biochar plus 10 tons per hectare treatment. Although the initial cost of biochar application was negative across all treatments, the cost-benefit (C: B) ratio was 1:0.37 for the most productive treatment (5 % biochar plus 10 tons per hectare of goat manure). We anticipate this trend to turn positive in subsequent years since biochar does not require reapplication. Further research is warranted to explore the integration of various organic fertilizers with biochar to enhance peanut production in organic farming.
