Abstract:

The emergence of antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation among uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) poses significant challenges in managing urinary tract infections (UTIs). This study aimed to investigate the association between biofilm formation, extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns among 127 UPEC isolates. Among the isolates, 11 distinct antibiotic-resistant groups were identified, with six strains (E3, E7, E8, E16, E33, and E64) exhibiting ESBL production. Biofilm formation was assessed as a key virulence factor, revealing that all strains, except E1 and E32, demonstrated biofilm-producing ability. The findings underscore the critical role of biofilm and β-lactamase production in the virulence of UPEC, contributing to the recurrence and chronicity of UTIs. This highlights the necessity for routine detection of biofilm-forming bacteria, ongoing surveillance of antibiotic susceptibility, and the implementation of effective infection control measures to combat the rising threat of antibiotic-resistant uropathogens. Addressing these factors is essential for improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden of recurrent urinary infections.
