In the present investigation an attempt has been made to study the effect of high density planting on growth and yield of banana (cv. Bantal, culinary type & cv. Grand Naine, dessert type) in coastal plain zone of Odisha. The investigation was conducted taking six treatments (2 varieties and 3 spacings: 2 m x 3 m with 3 suckers/pit; 1.8 m x 3.6 m with 3 suckers/pit; 1.8 m x 1.8 m with 1 sucker/pit) in a randomised block design with four replications during the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. Observations were recorded on growth parameters and bunch yield. Pooled data over three years indicated that all high density planting treatments had higher pseudo-stem height than the control. The plant girth decreased with increase in number of q per hill. Number of leaves/plant increased in all the high density planting (HDP) treatments. All the HDP treatments recorded reduced bunch weight and hands per bunch but higher yield. Pooled analysis revealed that planting of 3 suckers per pit at 2 m × 3 m spacing recorded the highest yield for both the cultivars under coastal plain zone of Odisha.
